How many types of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are there?
As the host of ‘AI – The Future of Business’, I wanted to dig into various types of AI as one of the first topics. There are either 4 types of AI or 3 types of AI depending on who you listen to.
4 Types of AI:
Reactive machines: Very limited capability that just produces an output based on input. No memory and no learning.
Limited memory: Machines that are capable of learning from historical data and make better predictions. Most current applications fall into this category.
Theory of Mind: Machines that begin to interact with the thoughts and emotions of humans. This is at a conceptual stage and work in progress as we speak.
Self-aware: The final stage of AI that has evolved to be human-like with independent intelligence. We are far from this.
There are 3 other types of AI which I think are similar in concept.
Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI): Systems designed for one specific task and whose capabilities are not easily transferable to other systems
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): Machines with human-level or higher intelligence capable of abstracting concepts from limited experience and transferring knowledge between domains.
Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI): This is where machines become self-aware and surpass the capacity of human intelligence and ability.
